Our model

UMRio’s methodology was developed following two years of research at the University of Oxford into the role of sport in challenging violence and exclusion. In partnership with the Oxford University Rugby Club and the Cambridge University Rugby Club, we use rugby as a platform to create an enabling environment for children and young people. Together with education and healthcare, rugby is part of our three pillar development model, which has a sole purpose of creating change.

UMRio’s Theory of Change plays a big part in everything we do. It is based on the understanding that real change to young people’s behaviour, situation and choices are dependent on how they relate to education, the range of their personal network, their access to healthcare, the way they see themselves and how they see their future. In understanding this, UMRio works to address its participants unique situations through a personalized and multifaceted approach.

Our goal is not to create professional rugby players, but to help young people create new opportunities through rugby, education, and healthcare interventions, which in turn, builds self belief and confidence in participants.
