Developed after two years of research at Oxford University, we leverage rugby as a vehicle for social change for children and young people in some of São Gonçalo’s, Niterói’s, and Rio de Janeiro’s most marginalised communities. Together with education, healthcare, employability, and social welfare, rugby serves as the entry-point to all of our programming.

Our Methodology

At UmRio, we believe in an integrated and comprehensive approach to all of our work, where rugby can be the spark which ignites meaningful change in the lives of the most traditionally excluded children and young people in the State of Rio de Janeiro. In fact, our UmRio methodology works to address each of our participants’ unique situations. Our goal is not to create professional rugby players but to help young people create new opportunities, which, in turn, build self assurance and confidence in all those who participate.
