We at UmRio are dedicated to making real and meaningful change in the lives of children and young people across communities throughout Rio de Janeiro State. While our Five Pillars explain the programming we provide, our Theory of Change is the foundation which underpins everything we do.
UmRio’s Theory of Change serves as the framework we use to assess the causal links between the programming we provide and the outcomes and impact our work seeks to accomplish.

Through integrated partnership, our data-driven approach, and a comprehensive monitoring, evaluation and accountability system, our Theory of Change guarantees all UmRio programming is not only urgently needed but also personalised and contextually and culturally relevant.
In practice, UmRio aims to cultivate and nurture a safe and enabling environment for vulnerable children and young people where they can develop skills, and gain access to services and opportunities to build bright, successful futures for themselves and their community. Rugby becomes the platform we use to begin to build these possibilities, engaging young people and providing tangible support and interconnected opportunities for educational, professional, and personal development.
At our core, UmRio works to address the principal drivers of poverty and involvement in organised crime by delivering positive impact in personal development indices, educational attainment, job-readiness, and health and wellbeing, while addressing financial pressures through entry-level employment opportunities and pro-bono services.

Our Theory of Change has been recognized both nationally and internationally. Through partnerships with Fundação Oswaldo Cruz (Fiocruz) of the Ministry of Health, Niterói City Council, and Play Rugby USA to name a few, we have trained over hundreds of professionals, educators, social service providers, coaches and Third Sector workers in our methodology and how they can utilise our Theory of Change to make an impact in their own work.
